ABOUT

History of Monmouth House

Monmouth House is a Grade II listed Georgian house dating from the 1600’s which has been fully renovated. The Duke of Monmouth resided here during the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685.  The owners have made efforts to retain and restore much of the character of this historic building, incorporating original features such as wood panels, windows, exposed beams and flooring and the decor reflects a homely and relaxed approach to the holiday experience.

There are five apartments in the building all with historic features. The apartments Priesthole, Earl of Argyle, Lord Grey, Duke of Monmouth and the Earl of Feversham are all named after historic men involved on both sides of the Monmouth Rebellion conflict during 1685 which was an attempt to overthrow James II, The Duke of York who had become King of England, Scotland and Ireland upon the death of his elder brother Charles II. During the recent renovation, what is believed to be a ‘Priest hole’ was discovered hidden behind passageway walls.

The house has a chequered history including being a merchants house with a cock fighting pit, a home for clergy women and a house of ill repute!  Monmouth House is located in the very heart of the beautiful, unspoilt seaside town of Lyme Regis, on the stunning Dorset coast.

Monmouth Street is one of the historic thoroughfares in the old town of Lyme Regis that bounds an artisan triangle of bakeries, galleries, arts & crafts and bespoke haute couture.  Monmouth House is steps away from the site of Mary Anning's house which is now a museum.
